A 6.5" mid isn't really necessary – a 3 or 4" midrange driver should be just fine and allow you to mount it higher to help with stage height. If you go that route, don't worry about trying to build an enclosure in the door, but DO worry about deadening and sealing the door.21 May 2013
How much air space does a 6.5 speaker need?

0.75^ft | 2x 6.5 or 1x 8 | 11.25 sq in. vent x 22.3” long |

Do speakers need enclosures?
The truth is that speakers do not absolutely require enclosures to act as transducers, but nearly all utilize enclosures to improve performance. Speaker enclosures have a great effect on the speaker's sonic character and are largely required to mitigate phase cancellation at lower frequencies.
Do mid range speakers need a box?
Tweeters usually come capsulated and do not need enclosures. Midrange drivers need their own chamber, mainly to separate it from the bass driver (so the pressure from the bass doesn't interfere with the midrange's cone), but volume is not to be neglected, as it does affect the sound signature.
Do speakers sound better in an enclosure?
Thanks. Yes, it will sound much better with a properly designed box, and with a properly designed crossover that divides the frequency spectrum to each respective driver. These are non-negotiable if you want good sound, and protect the drivers from damage.
Are 8in subwoofers any good?
An 8" subwoofer is going to give you tight, clean bass. There are some 8-inch subwoofers that sound really nice and some might even compare them to a lower end 10" or 12", but generally speaking, an 8 subwoofer is going to give you nice, affordable, clean bass.
How much space do speakers need?
Speaker separation. Try to get about 4 feet of separation for bookshelf speakers or 8 feet for floorstanding speakers. If your speakers are too close, sounds will blend together and become muddy. If they are too far apart, there will be a gap between the two halves of the stereo image (more on this later).
Should car speakers be in an airtight enclosure?
Well, 99% of car component speakers are intended/designed to be installed infinite baffle, so a sealed or ported box is a bad idea for them.
Does speaker box affect sound?
At a casual glance, a loudspeaker enclosure seems just a container — simply a box. But this appearance is deceiving. In fact, the speaker enclosure is an active partner in the enterprise of sound reproduction, and its design and construction strongly influence the character of the sound.
